Part-ayyy

Today was the birthday of the kid's good friend from daycare. Kestian and Adelaide were invited to her birthday party - the only ones from daycare - so that was really nice. It was a fun celebration at their home, complete with a huge tray of Chik-Fil-A nuggets, chips and guacamole, fruit salad, white chili, and cupcakes. The house was full of people - family and friends - and while everyone had a great time, it was a bit chaotic.

It makes me wonder about what we should do for the kid's birthday. They are at the age now where birthday parties are important and will be something they'll remember, so I do want to do something. While we have upgraded our housing, we still don't have a huge place to invite a lot of kids (and all their parents over). And remember, we need to recognize that there are two people having birthdays - so that may mean a few more guests than your typical 4-year-old birthday party.

However, I think considering that the kids share pretty much all the same friends at this age, there would be no point in having separate parties for them. No one is going to want to send their kid to one party for Adelaide, only to turn around three hours later to come to another party for Kestian. So I think it will be best to combine their party into one event, but making some adjustments - separate cake, separate "birthday song", separate gift opening, etc, for each of them...

So I think I mentioned this before, but the Explorium does these birthday parties for not too bad a price. And not having to have a bunch of kids at our house to clean up after and watch over is a GREAT bonus. I guess I'll need to look into that soon if that's the route we want to go. Since we have an annual membership we do get a discount!

Here's some pics from today's party...

Oh, and that little baby in the upper left corner of the picture... she INHALED her cupcake... all of it... faster than anyone there. As Damon put it, it was like watching a snake eat a rat.

It's still here...

I guess the ice and snow moved in starting on Monday, with the ice really hitting on Tuesday, and the snow topping things off on Wednesday.

Well it's Saturday and it's the first day that it's gotten above freezing (I think 35 degrees). So we have made no progress in getting rid of anything. Although tomorrow we are supposed to be in the upper 40's, so a lot should melt off then, only to be followed by two days of more snow coming in.

Here are some more pictures. I just continue to marvel at how extensive (and beautiful) the covering of ice on the trees is. It's like a crystal wonderland - EVERYWHERE. We had an ice storm in 2003 that coated the trees in the same manner, but other than that, you just never see this.

Book a Week: 1984

It was really good.

I was worried for a bit in chapter 2, but chapter 3 came along and I was happy. Unrelentingly cynical and dark. If Animal Farm is like a flash freeze, then 1984 is more like a low, damp, insidious chill that slowly penetrates and is unavoidable. In light of previous administrations, it can honestly be said that this book is timeless.

Last night at a graduate student meeting we had really bad pizza which I dearly wanted to call 'Victory Pizza'.

Tracing

Kestian is all into dinosaurs. And Adelaide is pretty interested as well. So I was printing out these neat sheets from this website to make the kids these books where there is page for every letter in the alphabet with a dinosaur that starts with that letter. The kids can color in that dinosaur, and then practice writing the letter. I thought it would make for a fun activity book for them.

Now Adelaide can pretty much write her name, but she looses the spelling towards the end, but with all due credit it's a long name. If we tell her all the letters, she can do it just fine. Kestian needs some more work, but is just not as interested in writing his name, so he has not practiced as much.

So I found this website where you can type in any word and it will create tracing pages for you to print out. So I made some for Adelaide, so she can practice the spelling, and for Kestian, so he can practice, well, all of it.

Ice and snow

The snow came in fast and furious this morning, and left a beautiful winter scape:

Ice day

Well here's something you don't see every day:

I'm glad they closed the University, but I wasn't going to go in anyway today. Yesterday, as we drove home, we had trouble just getting up the "hill" to our driveway. It took us several tries because the street had already iced over. And I'm not sure we would have made it at all if there wasn't a van there at the same time also trying to get up the street. After we made several attempts, he then gave it a go several times - and finally made it. He laid some tracks so that we could make it up to our driveway. Whew!

So we are truly iced in. Fortunately, we still have power. I did see that our daycare is open today, but we obviously aren't going to take the kids there today. On top of the inch of ice we have right now, we are supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow. It will be a fun day.

On the plus side, it's 8 am and I have already showered, done a load of laundry, scanned some pictures, written this blog, and straightened up a bit.

Hmmm... Maybe I should get the kids up...

Snow day

Today is a snowy icy mess in Lexington. But UK has this ridiculous policy of NEVER closing unless there is a asteroid hitting the school... However, by the graces of Zeus, we have a two-hour delay to allow more time to kill ourselves on the way in.

Now back about a year ago, we had all these issues with the last daycare and so we moved the kids to this new daycare. Amongst the questions we asked the new daycare was their policy on staying open/closing in cases of severe weather, as this was one of our issues with the old daycare. They would close all the time when there would be the slightest amount of snow, yet because the places we worked for would not close based on the weather, we were having some problems. So this new daycare said that they never closed - unless they had no power. But they would not close just because of snow. Excellent!

So with all of today's snow and ice, and with us still having to go in to work, I checked the daycare closings. Guess who is closed today? Guess who is open?

I love our new daycare!

You know you grew up in the...

So I'm totally into Facebook these days. It's actually something that's sorta come full circle for me, if you know what I mean. Back when I was in college, us college students all hung out on the college intranet, chatting each other, looking to see who was on WAM, all that dorky stuff. Sure it was primitive, but totally similar. I got out of all that after I left college. I still did a lot on email, did a lot on the WWW, but got out of touch with the "social networking." I didn't even instant-message with anyone anymore. It was probably only last year that I started instant-messaging with Damon again, which is strange since after all that's how we met! [Lies, all lies! -D]

So this summer, for work, I was doing a project and we were all playing with different web technologies - one of them being Facebook (which is really popular among college students! - hence the "circle"). Now, Damon is on Facebook and has been for a while. He's on the college scene so he knows about it [I'm hip to the college scene! -D]. So I joined and have started the slow progression of adding friends and joining groups. It's been fun. I am now sucked in. It's a totally different beast than what I ever experienced when I was in college, but the Internet is a whole new animal too, and for the better...

So anyway, one of the groups I recently joined was "You know you grew up in the 80's if" and lists a whole bunch of items related to that era. I can't help but laugh at the list. I have copied it here, and have added my own comments here... [and I also will add comments! -Damon]

You know you grew up in the 80's if:

1. You used to buy cassette singles… and still have some stashed somewhere… (YES) [no, I was too poor, though there IS a self-recorded cassette single of Laura's that I know of....]
2. You can sing the rap to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and can do the Carlton (I know most of the words, anyway. I'm sure Damon knows all the words.) [and I do!]
3. You hold a special place in your heart for "Back to the Future." (YES) [saw it in the theater, thank you]
4. You know where to go if you "wanna go where everybody knows your name." (YES) [who doesn't?]
5. You've heard of Garbage Pail Kids. (Heard of! I have some STILL) [Funny story here: When I was in fifth and sixth grade, my bro Jason brought home first edition Garbage Pail Kids before they were a phenomenon, and I was lucky to have a few of them including the legendary Adam Bomb. I was lucky because I flipped that card for 12 bucks when I was in 6th grade and used that to buy an Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook. You won't get 12 bucks for it now, let alone that amount adjusted for inflation. For a poor kid, that was awesome!]
6. You know that "WOAH" comes from Joey on Blossom (YES) [Nothing my love can't fix for you baby!]
7. Two words: Hammer Pants (YES) [sure]
8. You watched "Fraggle Rock" (YES...and have the first THREE seasons on DVD on our shelf...uh, for the kids) [what she said]
9. You had plastic streamers on your handle bars... and spokey-dokies or playing cards on your spokes for that incredible sound effect (YES) [yes to the cards, no to the streamers as far as I can remember]
10. You watched "Duck Tales" (Woo ooh!) (YES) [yes]
11. It was actually worth getting up early on a Saturday to watch cartoons. (YES, what happened there?) [yeah, but you know there was a lot of crap back then too. Rubik the Amazing Cube? Laverne and Shirley In the Army?]
12. You (your sister, cousins) wore a ponytail on the side of your head. (YES, Mom do you have a picture?) [yeah, I guess]
13. You saw the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the big screen..and still know the turtles names. (Didn't see the movie, but just yesterday Damon was trying to remember all the names - and did!) [I saw it in the theater, but wasn't that in 1990?]
14. You know all the words to "ice ice baby". (OK, I don't but Damon does! He often sings it to me.) [heeheehee....]
15. Poltergeist freaked you out. (I don't remember, but probably) [meh, never saw it, but I do not get scared from movies. Sorry]
16. You ever had a Swatch Watch. (YES, several and still have them in a box in my closet) [Another fun story! I was poor growing up, so I couldn't afford things like Swatch Watches, and don't you know I knew it. But, wonder upon wonders, one day in sixth grade while walking up the stairwell, I saw a perfectly intact Swatch watch lying on the stairs. You better believe I ran to and grabbed that thing, and wore it proudly since I actually had something cool.]
17. L.A. Gear....need I say more? (YES) [no]
18. You believed that "By the power of Greyskull, you HAD the power!" (YES - and we have some of those on DVD too!) [I actually had Castle Greyskull, which made no sense because we were poor.]
19. You know the profound meaning of "WAX ON, WAX OFF" (YES, and also have that on DVD) [Again, saw it in the theater. Laura brings up to me that I've seen many weird things in the theater (like Robin Hood: Men in Tights). She's just jealous]
20. You wanted to be a Goonie. ("Goonies never say die.") (YES, why don't we have THAT on DVD?) [sure, but I did NOT see that in the theater]
21. You ever wore fluorescent clothing. (some of us...head-to-toe) (No...strangely!) [no]
22. You can remember what Michael Jackson looked like before his nose fell off and his cheeks shifted. (YES) [sure, but why would I want to?]
23. You have ever pondered why Smurfette was the only female smurf. (YES, we've had long discussions about this, and we have the first season of Smurfs on DVD too!) [there have been things going around on the internet about this for years...]
24. Your first Walkman weighed about as much as a brick. (YES, I only just got rid of my "walkmans" this summer. I hold on to stuff way too long.) [yes]
25. You still get the urge to say "NOT" after every sentence. (YES) [sure, but I always thought this was annoying]
26. You remember Hypercolor t-shirts. (YES, but never wore them - thank god!) [never had one]
27. You knew "The Artist", when he was humbly called "Prince". (YES) [yes]
28. You thought She-ra (Princess of Power!) and He-Man should hook up. (Many 80's kids have informed me that this would be incest so scrap that)! (YES, but I wasn't too into the He-Man thing...) [never really watched or cared for She-ra, sorry]
29. You thought your childhood friends would never leave because you exchanged handmade friendship bracelets. (YESSSSS) [nah]
30. After you saw Pee-Wee's Big Adventure you kept saying "I know you are, but what am I?" (YES) [saw it in the theater, again...]
31. You were a Cub Scout, brownie or girl guide but now you have no idea what all the badges you got were for. (YES) [Nope, not at all]
32. You remember going to the skating rink before there were inline skates. (YES) [Ha! Superskate! In the Cape St. Claire group on Facebook they talk about this all the time]
33. If you ever said "I pity the fool". (YES) [sure]
34. You have ever played with a Skip-It or Elastix (Hmmm don't remember) [what the hell is that?]
35. You had or attended a birthday party at McDonalds. (YES) [nope]
36. You've gone through this nodding your head in agreement. (YES) [yes, yes, yes]
37. You remember when cellular phones weighed 15 lbs. and had to be carried over your shoulder. (YES) [nope, poor, you get the drill]
38. You wore like, EIGHT pairs of socks over tights with high top Reeboks. (YES) [no]
39. You wore socks scrunched down (YES) [no]
40. You remember boom boxes and walking around with one on your shoulder like you were all that. (YES, I never carried one around, but know of those who did) [sure, I remember and all]
41. You remember watching both Gremlins movies. (YES, and they freaked me out) [you know, I have never actually seen the whole movie. Odd, I know]
42. You know what it meant to say "Care Bear Stare!!" (YES) [no]
43. You remember watching Rainbow Bright and & My Little Pony Tales (YES, and I still have my Ponies and Bears...) [nope]
44. You had to come in the house when the street lights came on. (YES, such a different world back then...) [a different world back then? Ha! It is a SAFER world nowadays and violent crime is down. Kids still have to come in when the street lights are on.]
45. You remember Alf, the lil furry brown alien from Melmac. (YES, and he ate cats...) [Yes, Alf AND the Alf cartoon. Don't ask]
46. You remember New Kids on the Block when they were cool...and don't even flinch when people refer to them as "NKOTB" (YES) [NKOTB sucked and everyone knew it]
47. You knew all the characters names and their life stories on "Saved By The Bell," The ORIGINAL class. (Hmmm...I was never into Saved By The Bell, but I know of the show) [Yeah, plus when they were in Ms. Bliss' class in Indiana]
48. You know all the words to Bon Jovi - "SHOT THROUGH THE HEART AND YOUR TO BLAME.. YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME" (YES, most of them anyway) [yes...]
49. You just sang those words to yourself. (YES) [Dammit!]
50. You have a tendency to turn the collar up on your Polo shirts. (Mmmm, not really, but that WAS the fad) [uhhh....not so much Polo shirts, but button down shirts...]
51. Your first computer was a Commodore 64 or an Atari 800. (YES, We had something of that nature) [Nope, poor again]
52. You know what movie the phrase, "Number 5 is alive!" is from. (Hmmm...dunno about that one!) [Short Circuit, though I don't know if I've ever actually seen the movie]
53. You played with Lego’s when they were just blocks of various sizes, not any of the special little parts. (YES, and have saved ALL of them) [yes]
54. You took plastic cartoon lunch boxes to school. (YES, I think mine was My Little Pony, or Strawberry Shortcake) [hmmm....I can't really remember, but I'm pretty sure it was brown bag or free lunch for me]
55. You remember that "Up above the streets and houses, Rainbow climbing high. Everyone can see it smiling over the sky. Paint the whole world with a rainbow" (Hmmm...sounds like a Rainbow Brite reference, which I WAS totally into, but I don't remember the line here) [I have no freaking idea]
56. You played and or collected "Pogs" (I knew of Pogs but wasn't into them) [I didn't collect them, but I knew about them]
57. You used to (and probably still do) say "What you talkin' 'bout Willis?" (YES) [oh yes]
58. You played British Bulldog or Man hunt (Don't know that one) [huh, maybe I should look it up on wikipedia]
59."You went to a Chinese restaurant to buy a loaf of bread, bread, bread. They wrapped it up in a five pound note and this is what they said, said, said..... (Don't know that one either) [huh?]
60. You sang " One, two, Freddy's coming for you. / Three, four, better lock your door. / Five, six, grab your crucifix. / Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. / Nine, ten, never sleep again." (I guess that's a reference to that movie with Freddy. I didn't see if b/c I hate scary movies like that.) [It is from Nightmare on Elm Street...]

Anyhow, you can see that I am SUCH a child of the 80's. So as my kids enter their formative years soon, I wonder what their list will one day look like. If I had to start the list now, it would include Teletubbies, Little Einsteins, Smurfs, Pooh, blocks, "Blue Puppy", and dressing up. I'm sure the list will change soon.

(The pic at the top are REAL Weebles that I grew up that I somehow managed to save all these years. My Mom recently sent them so my kids can now play with them. She also just sent along some of MY Barbies, with all the old-school clothes (some handmade). Soon there will be my Cabbage Patch kids and who knows what else! Thanks for holding on to all that stuff for all these years Mom and Dad!)

Explore more!

We headed back to the Explorium this weekend with the Twins Club. It was a good time as usual. I'm so glad we have an annual pass, because this is the second time we went and we again didn't do everything there.

We had a good lunch a local pizzeria and then proceeded to run around the place. Twins everywhere! We saw a local newscaster there, who is a mother of twins, but I don't know if it was coincidence or if she is in the club. I haven't been paying attention to the membership and I never did get a chance to talk to her...

Anyway, I'll just post some pictures from our fun day...

Give blood

I haven't been too active over the years with donating blood, but I guess it's starting to add up. This last time I went they told me I just reached the one gallon mark. I know it's not that big of a deal, but I was happy to reach some sort of milestone - and get a neat glass and t-shirt.

Only 8 more donations to get the next glass in the set!

Someone at our door

I made dinner tonight and sat down to eat, but was interrupted by someone at the door.

Here is a nice closer look!

I reacted the only way I could to these damned abominations.

What makes a friendship?

(Adelaide crying the background)

Kestian: I don't want to be friends with Adelaide anymore.

Me: Why?

Kestian: Because she is crying and she will give me germs and make me cry. That's why I don't want to be her friend anymore.

Me: But when she is crying, she needs you to be her friend more than ever, otherwise she will be even more sad and cry even more.

Kestian: But she will cry and give me germs and that will make me cry and I don't want to be friends with her, Mama.

OUR Star of the Month

Back in July, the teachers in the kids' daycare class had chosen Adelaide to be the Star of the Month. They have the kid/family create a poster that gets hung on the wall for the month so everyone can see. Adelaide was very proud, as we all were. But Kestian kept saying that he couldn't wait for it to be his turn. However, we weren't sure that he'd get a turn in his class - not because he's not a good kid, but because there are a lot of other students in the class that could also be chosen, but also I think the teachers just haven't been keeping up with it. In fact, Adelaide was the last one to have been chosen...and that was July...

So I finally got around to making a poster for Kestian that he could have up at home. Our own "Star of the Month". We picked out some pictures, and then the kids had fun decorating it with stickers. Then Adelaide added some more stickers to her poster from before, and I hung them both up in the playroom. I'm sorry that I didn't get around to it sooner, but now they both have a poster to be proud of.

Trip to the library

Usually we get books from the half-price book store or the consignment sales or wherever. But today I was in the mood to go to the library. The kids are learning about dinosaurs at school and Kestian is really into it. I thought we could get some books on dinosaurs for him, and Adelaide could get some fun things too.

So we headed out. I explained "The Rules". 1) No running. 2) No yelling. 3) Stay together.

We walked in and the kids start running off in different directions, yelling. Oh well.

I then proceeded to at least pick out some books for them while trying to keep them at least within earshot. After I got a few, I told them to pick out something that they would like. Kestian said he wanted dinosaur books. I told him that I already got him a bunch, but he insisted that he get his own. I showed him where they were and he then took all the rest off the shelf for himself. Adelaide then got a few other books for herself, but she just wasn't sure what she was interested in. So we have a bunch of dinosaur books to read, and an eclectic variety of others....

Maybe one day I'll have a nice quiet outing with the kids...like in 10 years....

Cooped up... a photoessay

Cooped Up by Day, Fazoli's for Dinner
A photo essay by Damon Orsetti

(Themes to read in this: kids are restless; it is cold, even in the garage; yay, Fazoli's and lots of food; yay, dessert; kids get home and are grumpy and tired)
